Excellent question! Almost all AFF scammers are versed in romance scams. Typically, no matter what type of scam they "specialize" in, they will dabble in romance in an attempt to cultivate money mules to help launder their funds.

One of the first signs this is a romance scam is the immediacy of the scammer falling in love. The 38th line written by Harry begins his grooming of Anita. Three lines later: "Yes but anyone can make the move if they both love each other." Typically, fraudsters rely on urgency and not allowing their victims to think things through. They concentrate on getting the money as soon as possible. Romance scammers are playing the long game. They groom the victims to be so emotionally invested they can't imagine the love isn't real. Little steps by the love lad and learning to recognize the signs are the key to baiting romance scammers.

But, I also knew this lad had previously attempted to woo our mod Connie L. Gus.

The falling-in-love-quickly scheme is just one of the red flags for romance scammers.

Let's tackle this part: "How about africans who are just looking to get a ticket out of the country, nothing aff 419 about that. how can you spot the difference between them."

We don't bait someone just because they are African. That's not how this works. More often than not, whether on a social media or a dating site, baiters are approached by fake profiles. The pictures are stolen. They attempt to move you off of the site to Whatsapp or some messaging service (for when their profile gets zapped). The profile claims to be American/British and the writing definitely isn't. They ask for personal info and pics, but do not share their own. That's the typical way one can identify a romance scammer.

Most of the scams we deal with are simple black-and-white. You'll see a scammer promising something or another that simply doesn't exist, and in some way attempt to collect money for it (AFF). Some romance scams are also black and white, just like the signs you see up above. If the scammer is using stolen photos, or making clearly impossible claims (he is claiming to be an American soldier who is coming home to you, as you mentioned) it is very straightforward.

With romance scams there is a much larger grey zone, where you can't always say for sure whether it is outright fraud or just sleazy behavior. Identifying this takes practice and if you ever have doubts, ask a Mod or your mentor.

^^ My character was approached on a dating site long ago by a man in the Philippines who I thought at first was a scammer. He turned out to be someone very lonely with a rather interesting story, but he truly did want to meet someone to move out of his country and was not asking for money, just a friend to help him get acclimated to a new life abroad. Of course, I did not bait him, and I gently wished him well (and gave him a few tips on his profile as he was open to it). Oddly enough, 3 years later my character received an email from him saying he was in the hospital with cancer, although the photos remained consistent from the first time (same person all the way through). I thought for sure I'd missed something the first time around and waited for the request for money. It didn't come. He let me know his insurance fully paid for his treatments, and a year after that he sent a note thanking my character (and others) for prayers and well wishes, saying he was in remission and likely to live a long life and happy to be back at work. There was never once a hint at asking for money. I have always hoped that guy wins the lottery and meets the woman of his dreams!

But most of the others who have contacted my character are scammers for sure.
