Inspector Claude Eustace Teal knocked at the door of 221 B, Baker Street. His face was grim. The door opened and a radiant Patricia Holm ushered him in, to where Simon Templar (the Saint) was reclining, feet up in an easy chair, reading the morning paper. Simon gestured towards the packet of Wrigley chewing gum reposing on the table. Teal reached for it, then abruptly changed his mind and unwrapped one he took from his own pocket.

"Well, old Blotto," observed Templar, "What gives?"

Without a pause in the rhythmic movement of his jaws, Teal reached into his pocket and tossed a photograph on the table. It showed the Saint, in a snowy white cassock and surplice, arms lifted in benediction.

Patricia smiled seraphically. "We aren't married," she said.

Teal's scowl deepened. He seemed to have difficulty speaking. "What the hell are you now playing at, Templar?" He grated through clenched teeth.

"You mean my new vocation as an internet priest, healer and evangelist?" Simon's smile was almost saintly in its innocence. He settled himself more comfortably in the armchair and threw the crumpled up newspaper accurately into the wastebasket. "You see, it all started like this ..."

Subject: PASSIONATE APPEAL

FROM: Tracy hatch.

I am the above named person from Kuwait.

I am married to Mr. Kazeem Hatch who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2001. We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days.

Before his death we were both born again Christians. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of $12.6Million (Twelve Million six hundred thousand U.S. Dollars) with one Security Company in Europe. Presently, this money is still with the Security Company.

Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to cancer problem. Though what disturbs me most is my stroke.

Having known my condition I decided to donate this fund to church or better still a christian individual that will utilize this money the way am going to instruct here in. I want a church that will use this fund to fund churches, orphanages, Research centers and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth.

I took this decision because I dont have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I dont want my husbands hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I dont want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraidof death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bossom of the lord, Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my pease.

I donut need any telephone communication in this regard because of the presence of my husbands relatives around me always. I dont want them to know about this development. With God all things impossible are possible. As soonas I recieve your reply I shall give you the contact of the Security Company. I will also issue you a letter of authority that will empower you as the new beneficiary of this fund.

I want you and the church to always pray for me because the Lord is my shepherd. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayer full all through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for a church or christian individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated therein. Hoping to hearing from you.

Remain blessed in the name of the Lord.

Yours in Christ,

Mrs Tracy Hatch

I picture to myself the scene: the lady diagnosed with advanced cancer. In a hospice, probably. Just three months left to live. The cancerous cells will be invading almost all parts of the body. It is painful. She would be under heavy sedation most of the time.

She has stroke. A blood vessel burst inside her brain and parts of it does not work. She does not have the ability to move her limbs.

Her husband's relatives are in constant attendance. They will overhear if she talks on the telephone. So she has had this computer by the bedside, with a dialup to a satellite service provider and is typing up her emails with a straw held in her teeth. She has somehow come across my email address (which I used to say "nice site" on just ONE guest book) and is sending out an email in the hope that this unknown person will take the legacy her husband has left her and give it to charity. Yeah right.

Dear Mrs Tracy Hatch,

I have been pondering over your problem and praying for you and asking the Lord to provide a solution to your problem.

As a woman nearing the end of life, about to meet the Lord in person, wouldn't it be nice to start keeping to his commandments sincerely? You wrote "because of the presence of my husbands relatives around me always." and you assume they are there to misappropriate your money.

Forgive, Mrs Hatch. The good Lord beseecheth you to forgive.

They are the next of kin of your husband. They are there to serve you. They are waiting there to serve you in whatever way they can. And in serving you, a born again christian, they are serving your master, the one and only true LORD. I am sure they will respect your wishes.

Read the bible aloud to them. Have them read it aloud to you, when you grow too tired.

It hath great passages in it, especially the one in 2nd Book of Samuel about doings in a tent above the King's house. It is great and uplifting. Read it.

I can only hope that the great Lord provide you with a way to outwit those hawk-eyed relatives of your husband as you, confined to bed with a stroke, pen a power of attorney and send it by power of the internet to this poor worshipper of The Lord.

I personally have no need for money, since the church meets my every need. But the church is indeed in need of money as it actively seeks to spread the word of God amidst those unfortunate people who have not yet heard it.

Mrs Tracy Hatch, your words at this juncture will do more good than your money ever can if you can convert that bunch of relatives of your husband a-hovering over you to a lot of born-again christians, the way your husband was and the way you are now.

Should the Good Lord still wish that I assist you in any manner in helping you dispose of the money, I can doubtless find the assistance of one of my parishioners more versed in the matters of finance and law than myself.

I shall remember you in my prayers always, and include your cause in my every prayer. Indeed you are always in my mind, it has always been in turm oil ever since receiving your message.

Let us now say the Lord's prayer together.

Our Father, <snip> Amen.

Yours in faith,

Rev. "Saint" Simon Templar

Dear Rev. Simon Templar,

Thanks for your kind suggestion mail, i understood your mail vividly but i have to tell you the only truth of it, i can not reconsign this money with my husband family because my husband vow never should i do so, that he want the money to be used as i mentioned in my first mail to you. Given out this money all to them will arise critical situation among them because all they love is money, during existance of my late husband he tried to change his entire family from their dubbious, hatred, bad behaviour to better and make them repent from their sins. No one look up to him rather they plan to humiliate him which they succeeded at last. My late husband is the only son and only child of his late parents, they are rich with oil land which the father WILL to him before his late, his uncles and other relations fought him about this oil land but he couldn't gave up, uptill he is late. During his illness in the hospital he told me never to open up to his family no matter the pressure concerning his deposit fund abroad, that the fund will be used for orphan and etc. So Rev., why you advising me to change the will of my late husband.is it because he is late now, i can't do it, i will obey him till my demise on earth. I'm short of money for my pills right now but i will not touch the money untill it's sent for it's purposes. If you know that you want to help me out to fulfill this promise please kindly do, my soul and my heart will never forget your helping hands, i will remain grateful to you. expecting your mail. May almighty Father bless you as you help further.

Dear Mrs Tracy Hatch,

Since you insist on this financial transaction, I have picked out this God-fearing man from our parishioners.

He is financially astute, morally upright and in every way the ideal model of what a man should be. He also takes care of our computers and so will be able to contact you on his own. His email is [email protected].

I shall leave this matter in his hands, but I shall always be available should you need spiritual guidance. Pray to God, Mrs Tracy Hatch. He has power over souls. But he has even more power over our bodies. With Him all things are possible. He shall cure you. Of any illness. But you have to go to him. Affirm your faith in God, and in his Son Jesus.

Miles away from you, I can only pray for you. But you can pray for yourself, and invite Him into your life. May God bless you and guide you.

The Saint stood awkwardly, hat in hand, apology written in every line of his countenance. He cleared his throat.

"You see, in my disguise, I am not expected to be a financial wizard", he said.

Lesle Charteris threw down his pen. "Just who are you?" He demanded, in a voice quivering with rage. "I created you, right?"

"Right," The Saint assented.

"Get out. And get some other character to play in your lousy drama."

And so it came to pass; that the Saint did call on Capt. W. E. Jones, and didst ask of him certain favours, and which were granted unto him with much graciousness.

Dear Mrs Tracy Hatch,

I am sorry to say that Mr Leslie Charteris is no longer available. He was sent to India on a mission of extreme importance.

We finance the setting up of churches abroad as part of our mission. That is how we spend the money entrusted to us by well wishers. Mr. Leslie Charteris is now in India, where he is in charge of the finishing touches of a small hall for Christian people to pray in. One of our parishioners donated about 300,000 dollars for that project and he specifically asked for Mr. Leslie Charteris to be in charge.

I am sorry to be switching people around this way but I think Mr. Biggles will be glad to assist you. He is now recovering from a crash and so not very active, but he has his own private flying school and so the means to transfer large sums of money. He is also rich, and so I can trust the handling of large moneys to him.

I am providing him with your email address and he will conntact you shortly.

I trust you are feeling better now, Mrs Tracy Hatch. We have been remembering you in our prayers. The great God has the power to heal you. Put your trust in God and in his only begotten son, Jesus. Pray with all your might, and your illness is a mere nothing to God who created this heaven and earth. Ask him, sincerely, to make you well and he will surely respond.

Yours In Christ,

Rev. Simon Templar.

Dear Biggles,

I just had a call from Father Claude Eustace Teal and he confirmed that Mr Leslie Charteris was able to collect the $3500 from the Western Union. As the bank account has not yet been set up, the problem is at that end, your help was very timely and we are very grateful to you. In fact, the setting up of that mission in India is entirely due to your contribution and it is very gratifying that you continue to support us.

If the bank account does not work the next week too, would you kindly transfer a further amount of $3500 to them? You can deduct it from the next instalment due to the church here.

I expect that the two of them will be back here by the next month, if all goes well. They have sent me pictures of themselves standing in front of the new church building, it is being painted.

You should know that you are an example of his extreme mercy when you realise that it is only due to a miracle that you are still alive. That crash was unfortunate, yet your survival has gained our church a very valuable member. Remember Him and His infinite mercy to you, Biggles, I shall pray for your speedy recovery and that you shall be able to speak again.

I had called at your house earlier but Miss Patricia Holm told me that you were at the hospital, having checked in for physiotherapy. I understand that your fingers are rather stiff now so do not bother to reply to this mail.

Looking forward to seeing you in church this Sunday,

Dear Sherman,

It is true there was certain delay on my part in sending them my details. I was out of station. In view of my accident I have to undergo physiotherapy regularly and now I am beginning to travel to regain my business contacts.

Since my disabilities make taking up flying again rather difficult I am pulling out of the private aviation and flying school buisness and going into trading. I am now on the lookout for trading partners all over the world. I intend to focus on high-value low-bulk materials like gemstones, jewellery and electronic goods, mainly cell phones and laptops. I have sold my interests in the aviation company and now have just one small jet for my private use. My fleet of trucks and the transportation company has been put up for disposal.

Rev. Simon Templar has made me see life in a different light since my miraculous escape and recovery from that crash. I am glad to have made your acquaintance, Barrister, and hope you shall be guided by the words of Lord Jesus in your everyday work.

I commend you to place yourself in His hands, as I have done, and live your life for His sake.

In Jesus name,

Subject: Praying for you

Dear Mrs Tracy Hatch,

It is a long time since I wrote to you but rest assured you were constantly in my prayers. How are you today? I hope you are better. You must be feeling better. You must be getting better, as a result of all our prayers. The good Lord does not let prayers go unanswered. He is able to heal you, Mrs Hatch. In my prayers, I picture you not lying on the sick bed, but as an active, able woman, strong and healthy. Then I pray to God to make you that way. I find that it helps me if I have a picture of the person I am praying for. It helps me better to focus my thoughts. May the Good Lord have mercy on us, and May He shower blessings on us.

Please send me a photograph of yourself, maybe taken in happier days, so that I can pray better for you. And send me details of your illness, so that I can better ask the Lord to heal you for your generous heart.

Accept blessings from the Lord Almighty,

Rev. Simon Templar

Dear Mrs Tracy Hatch,

I believe Mr Bigglesworth is going to travel on your behalf sometime next week. How are you? I am worried on account of your health because you said you will write back and yet your email has not yet arrived.

A very important part of our mission is praying for the deliverance of sick people. We regularly make visits to hospitals. We have lists of people to pray for. We make house calls to those parishioners who are convalescing in their own homes.

Dear Mrs Hatch, though you are far away we count you to be among our parishioners and that is why we would like you to be more than just a name on a list. It would make our prayers more fruitful if we could look at your photograph as we pray for you. We have a wall plastered full with the photographs of those people we remember in our prayers. You had written that you were having a new photo taken. There is no need. Just send us any old photo you have, it will do.

Pray to God for deliverance. He shall not desert you in your hour of need. He is the one path on the way to righteousness. As you have been valiant in your efforts to serve his cause, so shall he reward you with his grace and full health. It is the effect of our combined prayers that you have been feeling better. Pray on, you shall surely get even better.

Shall the healing power of the Lord Jesus come upon you, Amen.

Prayerfully,

Dear Barrister,

I discussed the trip with Rev. Simon Templar, because it was he who brought me into this business. At that time, he had said that it was a matter of receiving a sum of money from somebody abroad who wanted to leave their legacy to charity.

Now he is against the use of force or coersion or bribery of any kind in the process of acquiring a donation. His stand is that this is not a business transaction. Therefore payment of any sort of fee cannot be authorised.

Rev. Simon Templar has authorised me however, to make two trips to Amsterdam or anywhere else as you might seem fit. The first is to sign documents or arrange matters etc so that the paperwork necessary to release the consignment from the security company can be done.

Then you, as the Barrister of Mrs. Tracy Hatch, must advance any fee etc necessary for the release of the consignments. You can recoup the amount and any fees that you charge from the value realised after the consignment is released and converted.

I shall come there the second time to accept the proceeds, whatever remains after the consignment has been released and paid for and transfer it to the Church of Good Hope and Faith.

The church is right now receiving many donations from wellwishers. I am one of them. But the committee headed by Rev. Simon Templar decides on the financial matters, on the flow of money. He will have to give his consent if any money is to be paid out. This applies to everything, from missionary activities funded by the church to any legal fees necessary for the release of donations, as you have proposed.

Since Rev. Simon has not given me the go-ahead on paying your security company I regret to inform you that I shall not be able to make my rendevouz at Amsterdam on 23d this month. However, you can arrange matters so that it proceeds as I have related above and then I shall be happy to proceed.

Or else you can contact Rev. Simon Templar directly and obtain his permission for me to pay you the 10,000 euro as the legal fees. Either way, I have no preference in this matter since I am only acting in this matter on behalf of the Church of Good Hope and Faith.

I hope, Barrister, that the situation is entirely clear. Please do get in contact with Rev. Simon Templar or his secretary and if he agrees to the transfer of the money I personally will have no objection to it.

With regards,

WH Biggles

Sir,

In view of your mail dated yesterday, i have read and understood all contents. Knowing Rev. Simon Templar Plight and decisions, I have verify all and querry's the Security company concerning this issue, if there's any means of avoiding this necessary legal fees for the release of the consignment in question in your favour. As you can see my client is financial handicap and for the past six months now i have no intention of asking for my legal charges from her due that i know all her problems, i'm God fearing man. If i have such amount at this present i could have send it over to you to off-set the necessary charges.

I was made to understand that the charges are irrevocable and mandatory, in the course of my investigation i found out that there's no element of corruption or saboteur. My client is aware of this development and she appeal to you and Rev. Simon Templar to assist in this respect, she commence further that she earlier inform Rev. Simon Templar that 5% set aside is to cover all expenses both local and international that will be incurred during the execution of this charity project donation will be reimburse back as soon as the fund is been transfer and rest under your custody for it's purpose. Rev.Simon Should note at this juncture that his effort or the church assistance is not invain.

Well as you wish for me to write Rev. Simon regarding to this issue to enable him give go-ahead, i will do so.I promise and guranttee you that this charity (donation)Project is free and fair and you should not initiate any atom of fear during executing this project. I still understand by my client that another 35% willbe map out after the money is been send to you for personal reward to you and Rev. Simon Templar for assistance render and the remaining 60% is for church donation to carryout charity project to the widows, orphanages and church funding. I fully guess that all is well arranged by my client Mrs Tracy Hatch to fulfill her promise to God.

Please note at this point of time we should not allow devil to stagnate in this matter. Hence you have been honour by the security company as the sole bonafide beneficiary of the deposit consignment no one else can come forward for the claim, so advise we all team together and make this work perfectly by the special grace of God! Amen.

I will then commence to Rev. Simon Templar concerning this issue so soon because there's no time to waist, you have only two days to meet up appointment with the security firm Amsterdam we should not let our effort to be invain.

Sir,

It's my pleasure writting you today, may the peace of Lord be with you "FATHER".I am Barrister Rudolph Sherman an attorney to Mrs Tracy Hatch, i am following all the charity transaction so far between the security firm and Mr. Williams Henry Bigglesworth up to date. Also i am aware of the irrevocable mandatory charges inpose by the security firm to release this deposit consignment in favour of Mr. W.H Bigglesworth, which he inform me of your non-acceptance to enable him proceed to off-set the necesaary charges demanded.

Sir, in respect of this issue. I'm honestly sincerely to inform you that all is perfectly well and after my verification with the security firm i found out that there's no element of bribery and curruption as you are thinking which is against the commandement of Almighty God. I do not believe in curruption to get what i need, so therefore "Rev" I promise and guranttee you that all that is require by the firm is legally and you should not initiate any atom of fear at this point. I and my client have look into this matter and consider the only wayout is for you to give Mr. W.H Bigglesworth go-ahead to fullfil the necessary fees to the firm director (GICT) in- charge for the release of this deposit consignment.

In view of this ugly situation above, my client has made it clear to me that she is handicap at this moment to be able to assist because of her present condition. I'm fully aware of this because i have not being paid my consultation fees for the past six to seven months, which i do not want to disturb because of my past good relationship with the Hatch's family for so many years now. I don't want to be liability to her, so i kindly beg on you to help into this matter and I personally guranttee you that the amount required will be re-pay back to you as soon as the money is being transfer to Mr. W.H Bigglesworth custody. I am quite sure by my client that 5% has been map aside to settle all relevant expenses both local and international that may be incure during the execution of this project, will be reimburse back before donating the rest to it's purpose.

I hereby wish that this my appeal will be granted by you to enable your partner Mr. W.H Bigglesworth proceed further for we do not have much days left. Dear Mr Mike Adams,

Please be advised that the trip to Amsterdam on 23rd stands postponed. There are a few issues I would like to clarify regarding the transaction with the Barrister Rudolph Sherman. I shall inform you regarding the probable date I shall be able to make the trip once the issues have been cleared up.

I'm sorry to cause you this trouble but as the business is not really my own and as I am acting as the agent of another I have to obey his instructions.

Yours faithfully,

WH Biggles

This bait is getting a bit boring and downright pedestrian. I've sent them an image of a passport. I've received lots of emails but no documents. Not even a word document with pretty pictures pasted on it. I'm feeling cheated.
It's Scammer - 1; Baiter - 0.

Might as well ask for certain documents. It might cost the lad something to get them forged and scanned.

Dear Barrister Sherman,

Be advised that the trip to Amsterdam on 23rd stands postponed. We shall take up that matter once again after we have come to an understanding on the details of the business we are employed in.

You have to understand, dear Barrister, that I am engaged in this business not for myself but for the church of Rev. Simon Templar, the Church of Good Hope and Faith. As I have to advise them on the financial matters we get together to discuss and the consensus on the matter of accepting the legacy promised by Mrs Tracy Hatch is that we accept whatever remains on the estate after all legal and consequential expenses have been paid.

In other words, if I have to advance any fees to you it will have to be borne out of my pocket. After the funds have reached the Church they will let me have only the airplane fare and other incidental expenses.

As I would like to convince the good Pastor and other members of the committee on the genuinness of this transaction  will you be kind enough to forward to me the scanned copies of the legal documents making me legally sole bonafide beneficiary of the deposit fund of your client? As the church has to obtain donations from willing people in order to carry on its work of spreading the word of the Good Lord we do not intend to disappoint anyone who wishes to donate.

At the same time, as a part of the church, as a willing donor to the good cause of the church, I do not wish to take any personal gain from this transaction. My wishing to retain the principles of good financial propriety on this transaction is because it is finely ingrained within me. I did not, within the course of a few years, build up my business around flying and aeroplanes just by following unsound financial deals. After I have become a devoted follower of Jesus, largely due to the personal efforts of Rev. Simon Templar, I have no need of dishonesty in any form in any of my dealings.

Therefore, kind Barrister, please send me those legal documents and let us have a look at them. I might be able to convince the Pastor and the committee on the genuinness of the transaction and so obtain from them the permission to advance you the money, which I can then reclaim from the proceeds of the donation of Mrs Tracy Hatch.

There is another way for the Church of Good Hope and Faith to advance you money. We usually set apart the sum of $300,000 in order to start a mission of our church in a foreign country. If some religious person were to come forward and volunteer to start one in Nigeria, because there isn't one in Nigeria right now, I am sure the request will be considered favourably. But that must be considered by Rev. Simon Templar himself, I do not have much to say on matters concering the recruitment of missionaries abroad.

Please do write again,

W H Biggles
(If this lad decides to join my church, I'm sure I can invent a few bizzare ceremonies.)

I've seen that funky clipart border elsewhere. Seems to be a favourite of the lads. Severe banding in that "red seal". Evidently the inkjet printer is running out of ink.

O. K. Trophies of some sort. He has sent me two forged documents. I sent him one. So - Scammer - 1; Baiter - 2. I'm ahead, folks! He has spelt "William" wrong. He shall be slapped silly for it in due course, when the time comes for Biggles to "go" to Amsterdam.
